Biographical note on Leonardo (later hand)
German inscription: greatest painter of the Italian school, born 1452, died 1519
The recto of the first leaf carries a note added in a later hand ("d'altra mano"), written in German cursive, describing Leonardo da Vinci as the greatest painter of the Italian school, born at Vinci in 1452, who in 1502 entered the service of Duke Valentino Borgia as a military architect, and who died in 1519. The leaf bears no work in Leonardo's own hand; its text is supplied only by the catalogue caption.
