A Scheme for Mixing Colors; the Eight Simple Colors

This page of the Treatise on Painting lays out a combinatorial scheme for mixing colors two, three, and more at a time in all proportions. It then defines the simple colors: black and white (kept as the principals of painting though strictly darkness and light, privation and generation) followed by blue, yellow, green, the tawny or ochre, purple, and red, eight in all. Leonardo notes he lacks paper to carry the full scheme here and defers it to his larger work, to sit between the theory and practice of painting. The last chapter [214] states that the surface of every shadowed body partakes of the color of its object.

A combinatorial scheme for mixing colors
The passage proposes mixing each color with each of the others one by one, then two by two and three by three, up to the whole number of colors, then recombining pairs, triples, quadruples, and sixes. Leonardo promises to pursue such mixtures in all proportions. It reads as a systematic program for enumerating every possible combination of pigments.
The eight simple colors and the primacy of black and white
Simple colors are defined as those not compounded from others. Black and white, though strictly darkness and light (privation and generation), are kept as the principals of painting, which is composed of shadows and lights. After them follow blue and yellow, green and the tawny (tan or ochre), then purple and red, eight colors in all. Lacking paper, Leonardo defers the full mixing table to his larger work, placed between theory and practice.
A shadowed body partakes of its object's color
Chapter [214], marked with a marginal b, states that the surface of every shadowed body partakes of the color of its object. Shadowed bodies show this with certainty, since none shows its shape or color unless the medium between the body and the luminous source is illuminated.
