How joints thicken in bending, the infinite motions of the shoulder, and measuring figures by length not girth
Continuing Part Three of the Treatise on Painting, Leonardo notes that finger and toe joints thicken the more they bend and thin as they straighten, then defers the mechanics of the shoulder and other bendable joints to his treatise on anatomy. He argues that the shoulder has three simple principal motions but effectively infinite ones, since the arm can trace a full circle and every continuous quantity is divisible to infinity. A final chapter holds that universal measures should be taken in the lengths of figures, not their thicknesses, because no work of nature exactly resembles another. Finger and toe joints thicken as they bend
The fingers thicken at their joints the more they bend and diminish the more they are straightened; the same happens in the toes of the feet, and the variation is greater the more fleshy they are. The joints of the shoulders and other bendable members are deferred to the treatise on anatomy.
The infinite motions of the shoulder
Chapter [269] says there are three simple principal motions of the shoulder joint (the arm moving up, down, forward, backward), yet they may be called infinite: turning the shoulder to a wall and tracing a circle with the arm performs them all, and since a circle is a continuous quantity divisible to infinity, the varieties of the shoulder are infinite.
Measure figures by length, not girth
Chapter [270] holds that the universal measures should be observed in the lengths of figures and not in the thicknesses, because among the marvellous things of nature is that no work of hers, in any species, resembles another with precision in any single particular.
