Memorizing Faces, Soft Shadow, and the Falseness of Palmistry
Ten profile and eleven frontal noses, the pocket notebook, and grace from sfumato
A fair-copy text page, unillustrated, teaching a method for memorizing faces by learning many separate features and classifying noses into ten profile kinds and eleven frontal kinds. Leonardo advises carrying a little pocket notebook of noted features to reconstruct a likeness at home. Two shorter notes follow: that beauty arises when soft lights melt imperceptibly into pleasing shadow, and that physiognomy and chiromancy are false because they lack scientific foundation.

Ten profile noses and eleven frontal noses
In profile the nose is of ten kinds: straight, humped, hollow, with the prominence high or low, aquiline, even, snub, round, and pointed. Seen from the front it is of eleven kinds, varying in thickness at middle, tip, and root, in the width of the nostrils, and in whether the nostrils are exposed or hidden by the tip.
A pocket notebook of features drawn from life
Draw the features from nature and fix them in memory; or carry a little notebook of noted features, and after a glance at your sitter look aside for the nose or mouth that resembles his, mark it, and reassemble the face at home. Monstrous faces need no such effort.
Soft lights melting into shadow give grace
Do not define the muscles with harsh outlines; let the soft lights end imperceptibly into pleasing and delightful shadows. From this melting of light into shade are born grace and beauty.
Physiognomy and palmistry rejected as false
Of fallacious physiognomy and chiromancy Leonardo will not extend himself, because in them there is no truth, as he begins to demonstrate.
