An object seen with two eyes is transparent
Because the two eyes see the ground behind an object, that object c is called transparent, hiding nothing behind it. This cannot happen to a single eye viewing an object larger than the pupil, whereas the painted thing occupies all the space behind it and can never be seen past.
Whether near or far relief appears greater
A new chapter proves that an opaque body nearer the eye shows greater relief, and the more remote shows less, being less detached from its field. With p the front of object p-h nearer to eye a, and n the front of object n-m further off, the eye sees field d-f behind the first and only part d-g behind the second; the proportion of relief matches the proportion of field to field.
Marginal relief diagram
