The Blue of Distant Landscapes
How aerial perspective turns far fields blue and pale toward the horizon

Sunlit fields partake of the color of both air and sun but mostly of the nearer air, becoming a field of innumerable suns to the eye; the more remote a landscape, the bluer it grows, and that blue pales as it rises toward the horizon out of the humid vapors. A final passage observes that things are less distinct in shadow than in light, that the universal light wraps shadowed bodies and leaves them little relief, and that when the eye lies between a body and the light its shadow becomes invisible.

Distant landscapes grow bluer and pale toward the horizon
Sunlit landscapes partake of the color of both the air and the sun, but mostly of the air, which acts as the greater because it is nearer and becomes a field of innumerable suns to the eye. The more remote the landscape from the eye, the more it partakes of blue, and that blue grows paler as it rises toward the horizon, coming from the humid vapors.
The blue of the air is born of light and darkness
The darkness of thick clouds, besides shutting out the solar rays, tints whatever it touches, but the surrounding air outside the clouds sees and lights the same place and makes it partake of blue. The air pierced by sunlight between the earth's shadow and the beholder's eye tints that place blue, proving that the blue of the air is born of light and of darkness.
Universal light leaves shadowed bodies little relief
Things are less noticeable in shadow than in light, and the universal light surrounds shadowed bodies and leaves them with little relief. When the eye interposes itself between the shadowed body and the light, the shadow becomes invisible to that eye, while the bodies to the side show more or less of their light according to their nearness to the line running from horizon to horizon through the beholder's eyes.
