The canon of the face: front and profile heads
Front and profile heads gridded with squares, fixing the ear, nose, eyes and mouth by a web of measured labels.
Leonardo works out the proportions of the human face. A head seen from the front is set in a square, with two diagonals joining the base of the nose to the outer corners of the eyes and a central axis showing the ears level with the nostrils. Two profiles, a youth and a man, are covered with lettered points that fix equal intervals: the face makes a square whose width is the span of the eyes, the ear is as long as the nose, and the distance between the eyes equals the width of one eye.

The corner of the lower lip lies midway between nose and chin
The corner of the lower lip of the mouth is midway between the bottom of the nose and the bottom of the chin.
Front view of the face within a square
A face seen directly is enclosed in a square; two diagonal lines connect the bottom of the nose to the outer corners of the two eyes, and a line of symmetry shows the bottoms of the ears level with the bottom of the nose.
Profile of a youth with lettered points (a b c d n S r q p h K m)
A profile of a youth is annotated point by point: the back of the head a, the eyebrow juncture b, the top of the forehead c, the chin d, the nose n, and further marks S, r, q, p, h, K, m, with the eyelids at 4 and 5 and a point x set behind the head.
The face as a square; equal intervals of the features
The face forms a square whose width is the span of the eyes and whose height runs from the top of the nose to the lower lip. The ear is exactly as long as the nose, the distance between the eyes equals the width of one eye, and in profile the parting of the mouth points to the corner of the jaw.
