Perspective: the Eye and the Visual Pyramid
Images reach the eye along pyramidal lines converging to one indivisible point
Leonardo opens the perspective section of Notebook A by defining perspective as 'demonstrative reason': all bodies send their images to the eye along pyramidal lines that converge to a single, indivisible point, which he locates in the pupil. He argues that if vision instead worked by parallel rays, small grains such as millet would never appear to shrink with distance and a large body could never be seen whole. Two diagrams contrast the false parallel-ray model with the correct pyramidal convergence to a point within the eye.

Perspective as demonstrative reason; the indivisible point in the eye
All things send their images to the eye along pyramidal lines that begin at the outer edges of bodies and converge, through distance, to a single point. Leonardo locates this indivisible point in the black centre of the pupil, calling the eye the universal judge of all bodies, and argues that no body is seen unless it is larger than this point.
Why the eye cannot see by parallel rays (labels a, b, c, d, e, m n)
Let a be the power of sight and b e the concourse of lines coming to the eye, with c d the grains of millet within it. If the rays ran parallel, these grains would never diminish with distance and the body m n could not be wholly taken in, so the eye must hold a single point where all pyramid-tips meet.

Let a b be the eye, whose centre holds the named point. If the line e f is to enter as an image through so small an opening, the greater cannot pass into the lesser unless it diminishes; and since it diminishes, a pyramid necessarily results.
