Viewing perspective from its own vantage; a shadow test
Place the eye at the picture's own viewpoint, and a column-and-lamp test of umbra and penumbra
Leonardo argues that a perspective of a nearby object will look correct only if the viewer sets his eye at the same distance, height, and directness used to construct it, ideally by looking through a hole the size of the face; otherwise the viewpoint should be taken at least twenty times the object's greatest width or height. Accompanied by proper shadows and lights, such a work will match the effect of nature. He then proposes an experiment: a small column eight times as high as it is wide, forty equal spaces marked on a wall, and a thin iron band four braccia off with a pearl-sized hole and a light, through which the umbra and penumbra are observed. Whether a perspective shows best from its own viewpoint
The heading poses the governing question of the passage: whether an object rendered in perspective gives its best demonstration when viewed from the very location from which its viewpoint was taken.
The eye must occupy the picture's own viewpoint
To make a nearby object produce the same effect as nature, the viewer must place his eye at the same distance, height, and directness of gaze, or better at the exact point where the maker stood. This may require a window the size of the face, or a hole through which to regard the work.
The twenty-times rule for a general audience
If a single viewpoint cannot be fixed, one should take the viewpoint at least twenty times as far away as the greatest width or height of the depicted thing. This will satisfy any viewer wherever he stands.
Column-and-lamp test of umbra and penumbra
To see the proof quickly, take a small column eight times as high as it is wide and mark forty equal spaces on a wall. Set a thin iron band four braccia from the wall with a pearl-sized hole joined to a touching light, then place the column at each mark, indicate the umbra and penumbra, and view them through the hole.
