Light and lustre on polished surfaces
How highlight differs from light, with a long thin source and a marginal maxim
The main column distinguishes light from lustre on the polished surfaces of opaque bodies: light stays fixed on an immobile body even as the eye moves, whereas the lustre shifts to a new place for every position of the eye. Leonardo also sets out which surfaces bear light without lustre and which bear lustre without a visible lit part. Difference between light and lustre
On a polished opaque surface the light remains immobile while the eye moves, but the lustre moves to as many places as there are positions of the eye. Rough dense surfaces show light without lustre, while dense polished surfaces mirror their surroundings and show lustre rather than a recognizable lit part.
A long thin light blurs shadow edges
A luminous body of long, narrow shape makes the boundaries of the derivative shadow more confused than a spherical light does. Leonardo notes this seems to contradict the rule that a shadow's edges are sharpest nearest the shadowing body, and blames the elongated shape of the source a c.
