On Mixtures: Making Imitation Agate and Marble
A craftsman's method for building up veined stone from thin coloured, transparent varnishes
Under the heading 'On mixtures' Leonardo sets down a detailed craft recipe for imitating veined hardstone. A natural or artificial branching is coated, fixed to a copper plate, then built up with many very thin layers of fixed and transparent colours — white, black and yellows made from saffron or turmeric in vinegar — the gaps filled with white, ground smooth with oil and sand and tripoli, sawn into thin tablets, polished and varnished until it looks like glass; the same stuff can be turned on a lathe into large rosary beads. A marginal note lists which ingredients yield which stones — brazilwood and saffron for cornelian, fig-milk for chalcedony, walnut husk or soot for agate — and remarks that no simple black or white was ever transparent. Building up imitation veined stone
Take a branching, natural or artificial, coat it and fix it on a copper plate, then build it up with many very thin layers of fixed and transparent colours, filling the last spaces with white. Grind it smooth with oil and sand and tripoli, saw it into tablets as thick as a bookboard, polish and varnish it thinly so it looks like glass, or turn the material on a lathe into large paternoster beads.
Colours that yield each kind of stone
A marginal note pairs ingredients with the stones they imitate: brazilwood and saffron make cornelian, or else turmeric or celandine; fig-milk makes chalcedony; walnut husk or soot makes agate. Leonardo closes with a rule about pigment transparency: no simple black or white was ever transparent.
