Device for spanning a crossbow
A crossbow spanning mechanism with details of its parts
Red-chalk sketches (oriented upside-down relative to the notebook) study a mechanism for spanning, or drawing back, a crossbow bow. The main figure shows the bow with its spanning gear, while smaller studies at the sides and lower right work out the individual components. No transcribed text accompanies the drawings.

Crossbow with a spanning device
The central sketch shows a crossbow fitted with a mechanism for drawing back its bow, a recurring military-engineering problem in the notebook. The heavy limbs and stock are laid out with the spanning gear attached.
Details of the spanning parts
Around the main figure, smaller studies isolate the moving parts of the device, including a hooked catch and toothed and cranked elements. They read as component studies for the same spanning mechanism.
