Circle, tangent and secant
The first construction sets a circle against a tangent line and a secant, worked out through a spray of straight lines drawn from a common point. A stack of small squares beside it carries the accompanying values.
Numerical values and a square root
The analogous figure is annotated with a run of numbers, including 144, 12 and pairs such as 6 9 9 and 8 9, together with a square root of 56. The values fix the proportions of the accompanying geometrical figure.
