Recipe to Remove the Odor from Oil
A pen recipe boiling oil with vinegar to drive off bad smell, over a faint red-chalk figure
Written upside-down in pen over a faint red-chalk figure, this page gives a household recipe for taking the bad odor out of oil. Ten boccali of strong oil are marked in a vessel, a boccale of vinegar is added, and the whole is boiled down until the oil returns to its marked level, so that the vinegar carries off the foul smell as vapor. Leonardo adds that the same treatment should work for walnut oil and any other malodorous oil. A red-chalk drawing lies beneath the pen writing but is not transcribed in the source.

Boiling oil with vinegar to remove its bad smell
Put ten boccali of strong oil in a vessel and mark the oil's height, then add one boccale of vinegar and boil until the oil sinks back to the mark. By then the vinegar has gone off in smoke carrying away the bad odor, leaving the oil restored to its first quantity; the same is expected to work for walnut oil.
