Curved Fortification Walls in Perspective

The e-Leo caption identifies this inverted page as a study of fortifications. In perspective, Leonardo draws curved defensive walls whose faces are hatched to read as a sloping scarp, reinforced at intervals by projecting buttresses or counterforts. Above the walls a lighter elongated, boat-like curved form is sketched, and faded, untranscribed writing runs along the top edge.

Scarped rampart with regular buttresses
A long curved wall is drawn in perspective with its face closely hatched to indicate a battered, sloping scarp. Evenly spaced rectangular buttresses or counterforts project from its base, and a lower stepped return runs to the left. The forms suggest a defensive enceinte seen from within.
Elongated curved form above the walls
Sketched more faintly in the upper part of the sheet is a long, curved, boat-like form with internal cross-strokes. It sits above the fortification walls and is drawn in the same loose perspective. Additional faded writing along the top edge is not transcribed in the bundle.
