Decorative 'A's with devices of ingratitude and expedience
The folio opens with three ornately drawn capital 'A's, one reversed and two given a distorted form, the second written over an 'O'. Below, a series of emblematic devices each carry a moral: a candlestick turned so its flame burns its own support, a bellows consumed in a fire captioned 'Ingratitude', and a tongue pressed within a clamp with the note 'It desists by means of expedients.'
