Panorama over a cultivated valley toward distant hills
The middle distance opens into a wide plain of hatched fields, hedgerows and scattered trees that recedes toward pale ranges of hills along the horizon. Rapid parallel pen strokes lighten toward the background to suggest atmosphere and depth across the open ground.
Rocky gorge and hatched cliffs at the right
At the right the terrain drops into a steep gorge whose rock faces are built up from dense vertical and diagonal hatching. Jagged pinnacles and ledges of stratified rock frame the descent into the ravine.
Fortified tower on the wooded hill at left
A crenellated tower or small fortress crowns a steep wooded spur at the left, set above roads that switch back down the slope. A few economical strokes indicate outlying buildings scattered across the lower ground.
