The bald head is turned in profile to the left and rendered in strong light and shade, the wrinkled forehead, deep-set eye, prominent nose and heavy chin caught with vigorous hatching. The large ear and the sagging flesh of the cheek and neck are studied closely, giving the head an intense, individual character. Loose drapery is sketched over the shoulder beneath the neck.
