Robe on a standing figure
A standing figure is enveloped in a full-length robe that wraps the hips and falls in long vertical folds to gather in a pool of cloth at the feet. The torso and head above are only faintly indicated, the study concentrating on the standing drapery.
Cascading folds in light and shade
Graded washes model the long folds of the skirt, catching light on the raised ridges and sinking into deep shadow between them so the cloth reads as heavy and three-dimensional. The exercise studies chiaroscuro on drapery in preparation for painting.
