Studies of Warriors' Heads and Helmets
Pen studies of fierce soldiers, crested helmets and a rearing horse
A pen-and-ink sheet crowded with studies of soldiers' heads shown in violent expression, several shouting or grimacing in profile beneath elaborate helmets. Around them the artist works out the forms of crested and decorated helmets seen from different angles, together with a horse's head at the left. In the lower half a mounted warrior brandishing a curved sword rears on his horse between two further helmeted heads. No text by the artist accompanies the drawings.

Fierce shouting warriors' heads
Male heads are drawn in profile with open, shouting mouths, furrowed brows and straining necks, studies in extreme expression. Bearded and beardless types are contrasted around the sheet.
Crested and decorated helmets
Several helmets are studied on their own, some with elaborate crests, scrolled cheek-pieces and spiral ornament. They are turned to show different profiles as if worked out for armed figures.
Rearing horse with rider and a horse's head
A helmeted warrior swinging a curved sword rides a rearing horse in the lower half of the sheet. At the upper left a separate horse's head with open mouth is sketched.
