A study of the drapery of a standing figure, the cloth caught at the waist and breaking into long vertical folds that fall to the ground. The surface is rubbed and faded, and the head is only faintly indicated in outline at the top. As in the companion sheets, the fabric and its light and shade are the true subject, the figure beneath remaining summary. An old inventory number is written at the upper left, but no autograph text is present.

Vertical folds of a standing robe
The garment gathers at the waist and descends in a series of long, tubular folds modelled in grey with white heightening. Light falls from the left, catching the ridges while the hollows drop into shadow. The study concentrates on the rhythm and illumination of the falling cloth.
