Studies of Heads and Eyes

This sheet gathers several head and feature studies in pen and ink. At the upper left a bearded old man with abundant curling hair is drawn in sharp right profile; to his right are two carefully shaded studies of a single eye, set into the surrounding brow and lid. Below, a young woman with braided and bound hair is seen in profile at the right, and a youth wearing a soft cap turns his head at the lower left. No text accompanies the drawings.

Bearded old man in profile
A powerfully characterised head fills the upper left, the old man's brow furrowed and his beard falling in thick curls, seen in strict right profile. Hatching models the cheek and the hollow of the eye.
Two studies of an eye
Beside and above the man's head are two enlarged studies of an eye, each rendered with close attention to the lids, the tear duct and the folds of the surrounding flesh. Fine parallel hatching gives the socket its depth.
Young woman with bound hair
At the right a young woman is shown in profile, her hair drawn back into a coiled and braided arrangement about the crown. The neck and shoulder are indicated in light contour.
Youth in a soft cap
At the lower left a youth wearing a soft cap turns his head to look up and outward, his shoulders and folded arms sketched summarily. The handling is lighter than in the studies above.
