Head of a young woman with downcast eyes
A finished study of a woman's face and flowing hair in red and black chalk
A highly finished study depicts the head of a young woman inclined downward, her eyes lowered and her expression serene. The face is delicately modeled in red and black chalk, framed by softly parted hair that falls in long wavy strands toward the right. The sheet is a refined study of a female head, tightly worked in the face and left more loosely sketched in the surrounding hair.

Softly modeled face with lowered eyes
The woman's face is turned down and slightly to the left, the eyelids lowered and the mouth calm. Subtle gradations of red and black chalk give the cheeks, nose and chin a rounded, lifelike relief.
Flowing hair framing the head
Hair parted at the crown sweeps back over the head and falls in long, rippling waves at the right side. The strands are drawn more freely than the face, dissolving into loose curls at the lower edge.
