Bald elder's head in near profile
The foremost head is that of a bald, aging man seen almost in profile, the crown bare and the brow deeply lined. The heavy jaw, sagging cheek and downturned mouth lend a solemn, sorrowful expression. The modelling is built up in warm flesh tones with red and black chalk.
Bearded younger man behind
Behind and to the left rises a second head, a younger man with dark hair and a full beard, his face partly lost in shadow. His shoulders are draped in a pale garment worn over a pleated red undershirt at the neck. The two heads overlap closely as if pressed together in a crowd.
