Monochrome devotional study of the Madonna nursing the Christ Child beside a bearded elder
A monochrome drawing, worked in soft chalk and wash, shows a seated woman with her head bowed and eyes lowered, cradling a plump nude infant on her lap. At the upper right a bald, long-bearded old man leans in from behind, his head in profile emerging from shadow. Virgin cradling the Christ Child
The central woman is shown half-length, her head inclined and eyes closed, supporting a rounded nude infant who twists toward her breast. Faces and the child's limbs are built up in continuous tonal gradations rather than outline.
Bearded elder at the right
A bald, white-bearded old man is drawn in profile at the upper right, leaning toward the pair with a downward gaze. His head and shoulders rise out of the shadowed background, consistent with the figure of Saint Joseph in Holy Family imagery.
Drapery and tonal modelling
Broad folds of drapery fall across the woman's lap and occupy the whole lower half of the sheet. The image is executed in monochrome with soft chiaroscuro, favouring modelled masses of light and shade over drawn contour.
