A bear is drawn walking toward the left in profile, its body built up with fine hatching over the shoulders, flank and haunches. At the lower left the artist has added a separate, enlarged study of one of the animal's forepaws, showing the pad and curved claws in detail. Fainter, unfinished sketches of a further leg and of ground lines appear behind and below the main figure. A small collector's monogram sits at the lower left.

Bear walking in profile
The bear strides to the left with its head lowered, the fur and musculature of the shoulders and legs suggested by short, dense strokes. The overall silhouette is complete while the hind legs are only lightly worked.
Enlarged study of a forepaw
Set apart at the lower left is a larger study of a single forepaw, drawn in careful detail with its pad and long curved claws. It reads as a magnified investigation of the same animal's foot.
