A red-chalk (sanguine) drawing shows a man seen from behind, wearing a soft cap and enveloped in a heavy cloak that falls in broad folds over his shoulders and back. He is seated on a horse, which is only summarily indicated in pale strokes beneath and to the left. Cloaked man on horseback
The rider is drawn from the rear, his head turned slightly into profile beneath a rounded cap. A thick mantle wraps his torso and drops in weighty, deeply shaded folds, worked in warm red chalk over the pale ground.
Lightly sketched mount
Beneath the figure the horse is barely resolved: its neck, shoulder, and hindquarters appear only as faint, unfinished contours so that the finished modelling stays concentrated on the cloaked rider above.
