A rapid pen-and-ink study shows a group of closely overlapping draped figures: a seated woman supporting one or more children whose rounded heads and caps cluster together, while at the lower right a child reaches toward a small animal, perhaps a lamb or a cat. The forms are searched out in rough, repeated contours typical of a first compositional idea, with deep pen shading behind the figures. Faint straight lines and hatching at the right edge suggest a summarily indicated setting. No text is transcribed for this sheet.

Cluster of seated draped figures
A seated woman in heavy drapery leans over and embraces one or more children who press close against her, their small capped heads gathered together. The bodies overlap so densely that individual limbs are hard to disentangle in the rapid pen work. It reads as a devotional group caught in a first idea.
Small animal at lower right
At the lower right a child leans down toward a small four-legged creature, perhaps a lamb or a cat, sketched in loose contours. The animal and the reaching child form a secondary motif at the edge of the group. Its identity is not certain from the rapid drawing.
Compositional massing of the group
The figures are built up as a compact pyramidal mass, their overlapping contours repeatedly restated as the artist tries out the arrangement. Broad pen shading sets the group off from the lighter ground. The sheet functions as a compositional study rather than a finished figure.
