A red-chalk study shows the head and shoulders of an elderly man in strict profile to the right, with tight curls, a furrowed brow, a strong hooked nose and a heavy, jutting jaw and lower lip. The modelling is built up in fine chalk hatching. The sheet carries an old inscription of the name Leonardo at the upper left and an Accademia collection stamp at the foot.
