Sheet of Flower Studies
Open blossoms, buds and leaves drawn in pen and red chalk
The sheet is covered with studies of flowers scattered freely across the page, some fully drawn in pen and ink and others left faint in red chalk. Open blossoms with rounded petals and clustered stamens are shown from several angles, together with tight buds on curving stems and broad, veined leaves. The plants appear to be observed from nature, with careful attention to the turn of each petal and the fall of the foliage. An old inscription and a number are written along the top edge but are not transcribed here.

Numerous flower heads are arranged across the sheet, some seen face-on and others in profile or half-open. Buds sit on slender stems and are paired with lobed and lance-shaped leaves rendered with fine hatching. Several forms are barely begun in chalk, as if the artist were repeatedly studying the same plant.
