Crane and Hoisting Machine on a Barge

The sheet is dominated by a large hoisting machine drawn in pen and ink: a tall inclined jib rises from a long framed platform or barge, its ropes running down to a great drum-shaped winch set on the ground at the left. Lower on the page a smaller geared mechanism and a scene of an embankment being cut or dug show the machine's intended use in heavy site work. A line of mirror-script at the top and an inscription at the foot are present on the sheet but are not transcribed in this bundle.

Crane with winch and pulleys
A tall inclined arm rises from a long horizontal frame, braced by struts and strung with ropes that pass over pulleys. At the left a large cylindrical winch drum stands ready to wind the hauling rope. The apparatus is a hoisting crane designed to raise heavy loads.
Excavation of an embankment
At the foot of the sheet a bank of earth is shown cut away, with framed structures set into the slope. The scene suggests the crane at work moving spoil or shoring an excavation. It ties the machine to the labour of digging and earth-moving on site.
