Study of a Rearing Horse
Lively pen sketch of a horse rearing, with fainter horse studies behind
A vigorous pen-and-ink sketch captures a horse rearing up on its hind legs, mane and tail streaming, the forelegs raised and the head thrown back. Fainter outlines of one or more further horses appear behind it on both sides, suggesting the same animal studied in other poses. A collector's monogram stamp sits at the lower right.

Rearing horse in motion
The central horse rises on its hind legs, its forelegs lifted and its neck arched, the mane and tail whipping in loose flying strokes. The pen work is rapid and full of energy, emphasising the animal's movement rather than its finish.
Fainter horses behind
To the left and right, lighter and more broken outlines indicate further horses, apparently the same subject tried in additional attitudes. These sketches are fainter and overlap the main figure.
