A young woman is shown half-length in coloured chalks, her eyes lowered, her hair parted at the centre and falling in waves beside a thin veil, a strand of coral beads at her throat. The face is softly modelled in flesh tones over the toned paper, while below she wears a dark gown sketched more roughly in black chalk. At the upper right a fainter, unfinished study of a pair of eyes and brow appears, apparently a second working of the features. The sheet is worn at the edges; no text accompanies the drawing.

Half-length female portrait
The woman is turned slightly, her gaze cast down, hair parted at the middle and drawn back under a veil. A coral necklace circles her throat and her shoulders are clothed in a dark gown. The head is the finished focus, the body summarily indicated below.
Coloured modelling and a repeated study of the eyes
The flesh is worked in coloured chalks with soft transitions of light and shade over the toned ground, in the manner of a cartoon for a painted head. At the upper right a lighter, separate study of eyes and brow is laid in, apparently a second working of the same feature. The gown below is left in loose black-chalk hatching.
