Three Compositional Studies: Seated Women and Children
Brown-ink studies of a pensive woman, two nude children, and a woman with a child in a landscape
Three small compositional studies in brown ink are mounted together on one sheet. At the top a draped woman sits on the ground and rests her cheek on her hand in a pensive attitude; a horizontal strip in the middle shows two nude children reaching toward one another; and the lowest study sets a seated young woman beside a standing nude child who points upward, before a lightly drawn landscape of trees and hills. No transcription accompanies these studies.

Pensive seated woman (top study)
A woman in heavy drapery sits directly on the ground, one leg drawn up, her cheek propped on her hand in a mood of quiet reflection. The folds of cloth and the bare foot are worked with dense hatching.
Two nude children (middle strip)
In the narrow central strip two nude children are sketched reaching toward each other, one with an arm flung upward. The forms are lightly and rapidly drawn.
Woman and child (lower study)
A young woman sits low on the ground beside a standing nude child who raises one hand and points upward. Their gestures and gazes are drawn to connect the two figures.
Landscape background
Behind the seated woman and child a landscape of trees and low hills is indicated with thin, summary pen lines. It sets the group in an outdoor setting rather than a blank ground.
Grouped composition studies
The sheet assembles three self-contained figure groups, each a small trial for a picture rather than an anatomical study. Together they read as compositional experiments in arranging seated women with children.
