Two Overlapping Studies of a Head
Superimposed head studies on blue-grey prepared paper, the surface abraded
Two head studies overlap on a small sheet of blue-grey prepared paper. The foremost is a youthful face turned down and to the right, with one carefully rendered eye and a softly modelled mouth; behind and to the right a second head is indicated in profile. Broad areas of the surface are rubbed and abraded, obscuring parts of the faces. A collector's stamp appears at the lower right, and no text accompanies the drawing.

Youthful face inclined downward
The central study is a young face turned three-quarters downward to the right, with a delicately drawn eye, softly shaded cheek and full lips. The hair is sketched around the brow in loose curved strokes and the neck falls into the shoulder below.
Profile head at the right
Toward the right edge a second head is set in profile, its features drawn more summarily than the central face. The overlapping of the two studies suggests the sheet was reused for successive attempts at the same motif.
