Geometric problems turning one solid into another at given proportions
A page of solid geometry listing paired problems for transforming one body into another while conserving quantity: extending or shortening a pyramid, making a cube from a pyramid and back, turning a pyramid into a cylinder, and reshaping any solid into a 'tavola' (slab) of given breadth and length. Leonardo defines the cylinder as a square body taller than the equivalent cube and the slab as one lower than it, and states that the proportion by which a solid extends equals that by which its base contracts. Because these proportions are 'surd and irrational', he says he has taken care to demonstrate them geometrically; several list-items are marked with a cross and a small solid figure is sketched at the upper left. Transforming pyramid, cube and cylinder
A series of reciprocal problems: extend or shorten a pyramid to a given length or height; make a cube from a pyramid and a pyramid from a cube; and from a pyramid make a cylinder, each at a stated dimension.
Definitions of cylinder and slab (tavola)
'That square body which exceeds the height of the cube is called a cylinder; that which is less in height than the cube is called a tavola (slab); and the same happens with round bodies.' The following problems reshape a pyramid into a slab of given thickness, breadth and length, and back into a pyramid of given height.
Proportion of extension to contraction of base
The proportion of a cylinder's extension equals the contraction of its base, and likewise for pyramids; as much as a slab is taken in one direction it grows in the other, and as it is thickened it narrows. Because these proportions are 'surd and irrational', Leonardo says he demonstrates them geometrically in every difficult case.
