A new bellows for caulking a hull at sea
Jointed tubes stiffened with tempered iron wire and double leather, tested with paper blowpipes
Leonardo presents a new kind of bellows that he says works excellently and is perfect for caulking a ship in any part of a voyage without careening it. The note explains how the tube sections a b are joined: a tempered iron wire, like the back of a knife, is set between the joints inside a double leather casing so the very great pressure cannot close the tube, and a sack n catches anything that falls without hindering the inner core. He advises testing the idea by making two blowpipes of pasted paper on a rod, first with short pieces and then lengthened. A tall device with a bell-shaped chamber, a coiled element and cylindrical fittings is drawn beside the text.

Joining the tube sections a b
The sections a b are joined by a tempered iron wire shaped like the back of a knife, set between the joints inside a double leather so the very great pressure cannot close the tube. The leather is doubled so that, if the outer breaks, the inner is not worn away.
The catch-sack n
The sack n is placed so that anything falling from above is caught within it without hindering the inner core, and once full it can be emptied from below without obstructing that core.
Testing with paper blowpipes
To prove the device, make two blowpipes of pasted paper formed on a single rod, cut them off lengthwise and reseal with pasted paper. Try short pieces first, and if it succeeds, lengthen them as much as you can to experiment with the whole.
The drawn bellows assembly
A tall assembly is drawn along the gutter: a bell-shaped chamber at the top, a coiled spring-like section, a knotted valve, and cylindrical fittings, with letters set against several of the parts.
