Leonardo tracks a laborer, the man a, moving earth from a to b over 32 braccia, throwing shovelfuls each 1/6 of a braccio thick and stepping back slightly more than forward at each throw. He reduces the total travel to 'sixths,' converts paces into tempi (an hour being 1080 tempi), adds the time of the throws, and finds the task takes about 2 hours and 54/180. He closes with a rule of three to compute the man's output of earth per hour.

The man a moves earth from a to b across 32 braccia, each shovelful 1/6 of a braccio thick, and at every throw steps back 2/6 of a braccio and 1 more to reload, always returning a sixth further than he advanced. The whole travel out and back is reduced to sixths and totals 37056, found by the rule of progression.
Reckoning the labor in tempi and output per hour
Taking the hour as 1080 tempi and 3 paces per tempo, Leonardo divides to find the movements take 2058 and 2/3 tempi, adds 576 tempi for the 192 throws, and reaches about 2 hours and 54/180 for 192 spadefuls. He converts these into 32 barrows and 3/5 of a cart and sets up a rule of three to find the output per hour.
