Studies in fractions and proportional means
Rules linking successive fractions such as 2/3 of 3/4, checked with whole numbers
Both pages are filled with worked exercises on fractions and their proportional relations, showing how one fraction is the given fraction of another (for example, that 1/2 is the 2/3 of 3/4, and 2/3 of 3/4 gives 6/9). Leonardo verifies each rule by choosing a convenient whole number so the fractions become integers, and works a ladder of cases from 3/4 : 4/5 up through 5/6 : 6/7. A second column reduces whole numbers to improper fractions and cross-multiplies numerators and denominators to confirm that the rule holds.

One half as the two-thirds of three-quarters
Taking the whole as 12, its half is 6, its 2/3 are 8, its 3/4 are 9, so that 6 is rightly the 2/3 of 9. The ladder continues: 3/4 : 4/5 gives 15/16, 4/5 : 5/6 gives 24/25, 5/6 : 6/7 gives 35/36.
Cross-multiplying to find a proportional term
Multiply the 3 under the 2 and the 3 over the 4 to get 9, set under the result to give 8/9, and the 2 over the 3 becomes 6/9, so the 2/3 of 3/4 are 6/9. Whole numbers such as 5 and 6 2/3 are first resolved into 15/3 and 20/3 to check the rule.
