Propositions on visual pyramids and rays
Numbered rules on how the images, colours and light of bodies pass through the air
The leaf is filled top to bottom with two columns of numbered propositions on the geometry of vision and the propagation of images. Leonardo builds up a doctrine of 'pyramids': every body is bounded by a surface full of infinite points, every point casts a ray, and the rays crossing in the air form pyramids that carry the likeness and colour of the body from place to place. The propositions weigh how the angles, length and slenderness of a pyramid affect how truly it reproduces the form and colour of its base. No drawing accompanies the text; the argument is wholly verbal.

Rays, points and the visual pyramid
Every body is surrounded by an outermost surface, every surface is full of infinite points, and every point makes a ray composed of infinite diverging lines. The air between bodies is full of the intersections made by these radiating likenesses, and at the apex of each pyramid the lines cross so that both the whole and the parts of a body may be seen.
How pyramids carry figure and colour truly
The likenesses of the figures and colours of each body are transferred from one to another by pyramid. The pyramid born amid more equal angles gives a truer likeness of the body from which it springs, while the pyramid of thicker apex most tinges the place it strikes with the body's colour — foundations of the painter's perspective.
One base, infinite pyramids
A single body becomes the base of innumerable pyramids turned in various convergences and of various lengths, and one pyramid passes through another without confusion. The apex of every pyramid holds within itself the entire likeness of its base, and the base's quality is present along the whole length of the pyramid.
