A Brief Method for Measuring a Distance

This transmitted-light plate sets out Leonardo's shortest way to measure the distance b n to a distant mark. The eye at b and a second station at a (say 4 braccia apart) each sight the target past an upright staff; the difference between the widths a b and c d gives the rate at which the visual pyramid narrows, and a proportion yields the distance where it closes. A worked example multiplies the base by its diminution (4 times 8 makes 32 braccia). A marginal figure describes a graduated instrument a b c d, its arm b d turning about a pole like a compass leg and its scale c d marked in degrees, points and minutes, with the note that it is better made large on the ground.

Measuring a distance by the narrowing visual pyramid
Standing at b and then at a, an upright staff is set between eye and target n at each station. The section c d proves shorter than the base a b, so the triangle (pyramid) a b n narrows at a known rate toward its apex, letting one find the distance at which it is fully consumed.
The proportion rule: multiply base by the diminution
If a base of 4 braccia narrows by 1/8 of a braccio over one braccio of travel, always multiply the base by the part of the diminution. Thus 4 times 8 makes 32, and the pyramid's length is 32 braccia.

The frame a b c d is fixed, its angle a a right angle, while b d swings about the pole b like a compass leg and its scale c d is marked in degrees, points and minutes. Sighting the target e along a c and then b d, a 1/100 narrowing of c d against a b puts the meeting point at a hundred times d b.
