Foundry notes: an iron core for the casting mould
Sketches of casting and fire-giving devices, with a jotted name, Pandolfino
The left leaf (f. 55v) is blank. On f. 48r Leonardo notes that an iron bar should fill the whole void a b of a mould when it is cast, so as to resist the breaking-through of the form, and adds that the piece should be buried once it is well annealed. Small sketches at the top are captioned 'to give fire' and 'drives fire in two places / tail,' and a taller apparatus with parallel rods and a curved base is drawn at the right, beside further untranscribed writing running down the margin. The single word 'Pandolfino' is jotted at the head of the page.

An iron core to strengthen the mould
Let a be an iron bar that fills the whole void a b when the piece is cast, so as to give resistance against the breaking-through of the form. Once it is well annealed, bury it in the ground. The note accompanies a casting sketch on the sheet.
Devices to give and spread fire
A small figure at the top is captioned 'to give fire.' A second, drawn inverted below, is labelled 'drives fire in two places' and 'tail.' The captions attach to barrel-like sketches suggesting an igniting or firing device.
Tall apparatus at the right margin
At the right edge a taller construction of parallel long rods rising from a curved, tub-like base is drawn, with untranscribed writing beside it that the bundle does not include. It is consistent with a mould-and-core assembly for casting. It is noted here only from the image, not read.
