Optics glossary: rays, mirrors, reflection and refraction

Headed 'In perspective,' this is a systematic glossary of optics illustrated with small ray diagrams. Leonardo defines luminous, diaphanous and opaque (shadowy) bodies and the ray as the luminous line, then distinguishes direct, reflected and refracted rays, the last bending as it passes between rarer and denser media. He defines the mirror, the incident and reflected lines, the point of incidence, the perpendicular on plane, concave and convex mirrors, and the surface of reflection. A final set of figures develops the cathetus of incidence and of reflection, showing that where the incident line meets the cathetus the object appears, for example at point a.

Luminous, diaphanous and opaque bodies; the ray
A luminous body is every body diffusive of its light; a diaphanous body is one through which light passes; a shadowy body one through which it does not. The ray is defined as the luminous line.
Direct, reflected and refracted rays
A direct ray proceeds from the luminous body without breaking or bending; a reflected ray meets an obstacle and returns, as in a mirror. A refracted or broken ray passes from one medium into another rarer or denser and goes onward bent, like light passing from air to water, forming a radial pyramid.
The mirror, incident line and point of incidence
A mirror is every polished body made by art or nature. The incident line is that first produced from things onto the mirror; the reflected line returns to the eye when it cannot pass. The point where the incident line reflects is the point of incidence, also called the point of reflection.
Perpendicular on the mirror and the surface of reflection
The perpendicular on a plane mirror falls perpendicularly on the point of reflection, shown also for concave and convex mirrors. The surface containing the incident line, the reflected line and the perpendicular is called the surface of reflection.
The cathetus and where the object appears at point a
The cathetus of incidence is the line produced perpendicular from the thing seen onto the mirror, and the cathetus of reflection that produced from the eye. Where the incident line joins this cathetus, the object appears, for example at point a; the closing figures label the angles of incidence and reflection.
