Squares and Roots, with Small Geometric Figures
A note on squaring a number and the roots R1 to R5, on a small mounted fragment
Most of the sheet is the blue-tinted ground of the mount, on which a small paper fragment survives at the lower right. The fragment carries a short arithmetical note squaring 2 1/2 and listing the roots R1 through R5, each set equal to itself over itself. Beside the numbers are tiny geometric figures: a subdivided square grid, two small circles and a cone-like form.

Squaring a number and the roots R1 to R5
The note works 2 1/2 times 2/2 to make 4/2, that is 2, then lists the roots: R1 is 1, R2 is 2/2, R3 is 3/3, R4 is 4/4 and R5 is 5/5. It is a compact exercise in squares and roots expressed as fractions.
Small figures beside the calculation
Next to the numbers are a few small drawn figures: a square divided into a grid, two small circles, and a pointed cone-like shape. They accompany the arithmetical note on the same fragment.
