Concave burning mirror: rays reflected to a focus and its profile
Compass construction of the mirror curve and the pyramid of reflected rays
On blue prepared paper, Leonardo lays out the geometry of a concave burning mirror. Diagrams of incident and reflected rays, a concave arc gathering rays to a point, and a large ruled construction accompany a text that reduces the whole to the law that the angle of incidence lies always between two equal angles. He treats the mirror's profile (the sagoma) as the generator of a pyramid of rays converging on a chosen focal point x, and gives a step-by-step compass procedure for tracing the curve so that every part of it directs its ray to x. The passage also describes seating the object to be heated on a support entering the bottom of a fire vessel through hole n, so that it is clothed all round by the power of the reflected rays.

The law of equal angles as the basis of the proof
Leonardo states that the demonstration takes its principles from the nature of the angle of incidence, which is always between two equal angles, and that this alone suffices for the proof, being already given in common perspective (optics).
Concentrating reflected rays on the object in the fire vessel
With the incident ray a b c d reflected in c d e, the base of the pyramid can be made 4 braccia and its length 4 miles by the given rules. To act on the object at e, its support is passed through the bottom of the fire vessel at hole n so that it stands at n e and is clothed all around by the power of all the reflected rays.
The profile as generator of the pyramid of rays
The profile (sagoma) of the base c d is called the generator of the pyramid c d e and serves as the guide of the instrument that produces it. To create it, one follows the rule c d e n f: given several lines converging to a point at a given distance, as with the marginal lines n o and m p converging to the point q.
Compass construction of the mirror curve to focus x
From the square a d e c the diagonal is drawn well beyond the figure so the curve is as flat as possible, and the reflected rays' meeting point is fixed at x on the extended lower side. Opening the compass to a thirtieth of the diameter and stepping semicircles a t, v 5 4, f r o h and so on, the point of each arc is carried to the convergence lines g x, t x so that every part of the curved line a g sends its ray to x.
The fire vessel and its support
The construction is tied to a physical apparatus: a fire vessel (vaso ignio) pierced by a hole n through which a support enters from below, holding the object to be heated at the focus of the gathered rays.
