Geometrical Figures Keyed to Euclid

Numbered figures citing propositions, conceptions and the definition of the circle

Geometry Arithmetic & Proportion

On the verso, mounted fragments carry a series of small numbered geometrical figures arranged in a left and a right column, one showing lune-like portions within a fanned semicircle and another with stacked triangles beside small numbered circles. The brief captions key the figures to Euclidean reasoning: figure 3 (lettered n, a, m) is justified 'by the 20th' proposition and 'by the 3rd conception,' a set of three segments is noted as 'always 2 greater than the 3,' and a fourth figure is glossed as the 'definition of the circle.'

Figures justified by Euclid's propositions and axioms

Figure 3 is lettered n, a, m and defended 'by the 20th' proposition and 'by the 3rd conception' (common notion), while a second figure is carried 'by the 3rd' and a fourth is glossed as the 'definition of the circle.' The captions treat the drawings as steps in a Euclidean demonstration.

Comparison of three segments

A right-column note on three segments states that one is 'always 2 greater than the 3,' comparing the magnitudes of the parts against one another.
