Pitch Cast over Bombard Platforms
A single incendiary note beside sketches of vaulted structures, trestle frames and barrels.
A lone line of text directs that pitch be poured over the platforms of the bombards, an incendiary measure tied to siege artillery. The surrounding sheet is crowded with rapid pen sketches: arched, vaulted structures, triangular trestle frames, barrels, and small plan and perspective studies. Pitch over the bombard platforms
The note instructs that pitch be thrown over the platforms (ponti) of the bombards. It reads as an incendiary or protective measure applied to the timber cradles and decking that carried the heavy siege guns.
Arched and vaulted structures
Two prominent arched, vaulted forms are drawn near the top of the sheet, resembling gateways or casemate openings. They are rendered in quick perspective with hatched shading around the springing of the arches.
Trestle frames and barrels
Below the arches sit rows of triangular trestle frames and cylindrical barrels drawn in perspective, together with low plan-like studies. These appear to be timber supports or containers associated with the artillery emplacements.
