Draft safe-conduct for marble from Candoglia
A fragmentary official letter concerning cathedral-works marble in time of plague
The upper fragment carries a fragmentary draft of an official letter or safe-conduct written in the interests of the Fabbricieri (the cathedral works overseers). It concerns sending men to Candoglia — the marble quarry supplying Milan Cathedral — for marble needed for the works, and grants safe passage despite the suspicion of plague. A lower strip is a curatorial blank, recorded as invisible before restoration and devoid of text; faint offset traces from the recto's mechanical drawings show through the upper fragment.

A broken draft written for the Fabbricieri names Pietro and Magister Alessandro da Merpadi, to be sent to Candoglia for marble needed for the works. It issues a safe-conduct so that, despite the suspicion of plague, the men may travel and be admitted without exception during their journey.
