Optics of the visual pyramid, the sun's spiritual powers and doubled mirror-heat
The verso continues the optical studies of the recto with the visual pyramid and small apertures. Leonardo argues that a thing beyond an aperture narrower than the pyramid's base is seen only along a transverse line and cannot be well grasped by both eyes, explains how the sun's likeness passes through an indivisible point because its powers (heat and splendour) are spiritual and occupy no space, and shows how a concave mirror can double a ray's heat and splendour. Further diagrams treat bodies interposed between eye and object, ending with the experiment of a finger between one eye and a light. Object unseen through an aperture narrower than the pyramid
Along a straight line, a thing beyond an aperture smaller than the sides of the visual pyramid cannot be well known by the eye. Although eyes a b have the aperture r S open opposite n, n is not known, because the master pyramid cannot be led to it.
Vision along a transverse line through a small aperture
A thing seen through an aperture smaller than the base of the visual pyramid is seen along a transverse line: the right-hand thing goes to the left eye and cannot be seen by both eyes at once. Eye n, joining eye m over point c, cannot pass the aperture t r, so the likeness is given transversely to eye m.
How the sun's likeness passes through an indivisible point
Reverse pyramids of uncertain vision carry no true likeness, making their base in the object's width. The sun is made of countless indivisible parts, and though corporeal its powers are spiritual — heat and splendour — which, having no body, occupy nothing and so do not close the aperture, letting each spirit pass at one time.
Doubling a ray's heat and splendour with two mirrors
It is possible for a solar ray, reduced to a point by a concave mirror, to be doubled in heat and splendour when the rays of the derivative pyramid are cast back by a similar mirror set at equal distance from the point.
A small interposed body does not remove the object's form
Even a non-transparent body set between eye and object does not take the object's form from the eye, provided it is smaller than the space between the two pupils. Let a be the object, p q the two eyes, and m n the interposed body.
A finger between eye and light halves the brightness
If an interposed body blocks one side of the visual pyramid, the seen body appears dimmer as less light reaches it. When one eye brings darkness and the other light, the two mix; darkness seems half less dark and light half less bright — as experience shows by placing a finger between one eye and the light.
