Loom Mechanism: Shuttle-Mouth Timing and Details
Diagrams of the loom's window, spring and shuttle action.
The verso continues the loom design, drawn mostly in red chalk. Diagrams show the mechanism through an opening — a 'window' through which the work can be watched — governed by a spring. A note describes the timed action of a part that takes its 'bite', draws back half a finger's width to close its mouth, then opens to tuck over the next thread, in the manner of a shuttle or beater. Smaller details are labelled stone, spring and sponge, and a small driving pinion (ruffiano) is drawn.

Loom diagram with window and spring
In the lower half a diagram of the loom is labelled with a 'window' and a spring. The window is the opening through which the work can be observed. The spring governs the moving part behind it.
Timed 'bite' of the shuttle mouth
A note explains that once the part has taken its 'bite', it should draw back half a finger's width, closing its mouth. It then opens and moves on to tuck over the next thread. The passage sets out the timed opening and closing of a shuttle- or beater-like element.
Detail labelled stone, spring and sponge
A detail at the left is annotated with the words stone, spring and sponge. The three named parts belong to a small sub-assembly of the loom. A further label names a small driving pinion, the ruffiano.
